When you embark on a new venture, such as small scale fish farming in your garden, it is always sensible to find out what rules and regulations exist and what permits, if any necessary. Introducing fish into waters into waters is controlled by the Salmon and Freshwater Fish act 1975. Power to administrate this legislation is vested in the various local Water Authorities who, under section 30, can give or refuse permission for fish to be mowed from one water to another.
Under this Act anybody who wishes to move fish within a Water authority area, or between two such areas, is required to apply to do so on the appropriate form, and obtain written permission. The form is quite a simple one-your Water Authority will provide it on request. Typically you have to give the location of the water form which the fish are to be transferred, and the date the date on which it is intended to do so. You also have to say whether there is any overflow from the receiving pond into a ditch or watercourse.
You must stare whether or not the water providing the fish is currently subject to any the water providing the fish is currently subject to any restriction order imposed by the Ministry of Agriculture, fisheries and Food under the Diseases of Fish Act 1937. if the answer is ‘yes’ you must inform the Authority Whether arrangement nave been made for quarantine and inspection.
You will have to contact your supplier about this formation . All this may sound rather formidable at first , but if a reputable fish farmer is being dealt with matter becomes a formality. Even though you are stocking your poor for private use, you must still, by law, observe the close season, i.e.

The period during which it is illegal to remove fish from waters by any means. The dates are determined either by statute or by local by-laws, and your local. water Authority must provide the dates of the close period as the regulation very form area to area. As examples, the annual close season for coarse fish (I.e. carp tench etc.) in the area administered by the themas.

Water Authority is from 14 March to r6 June, while that for brown trout runs 30 September to I April. At the present time there is no close season for rainbow trout.
